About us
The collection that Hugo has left consists mainly of Modern Art from Limburg – and especially Charles Eyck – but also the work of other artists from the Netherlands, Europe and New Zealand.
Hugo van der Aa
Hugo was an art lover and collector who specialized in paintings and graphics 1870-1980, as well as in glass and applied art on a small scale.
Together with Peter de Boer of Kalpa Art he ran a gallery in the Rechtstraat 19 in Maastricht – Toonzaal Maastricht – from the beginning of 2002 until the end of 2011. The Authentic African Art from Peter and the collection from Limburg, the Netherlands, Europe and New Zealand of Hugo, combined with a local guest artist, always supplied an invigorating and exciting contrast.
The collection that Hugo has left consists mainly of Modern Art from Limburg – and especially Charles Eyck – but also in the work of other artists from the Netherlands and Europe.
Jill van der Aa-Shand
As a young man of twenty-two Hugo immigrated to New Zealand where he met me, Jill. In recent trips we were invited to look at the New Zealand landscape anew through the eyes of local artists, and returned home with a number of works.
When I was a University student in New Zealand in the early 60’s I organized an exhibition of well-known local New Zealand artists and have since then kept my interest alive, clearly stimulated by Hugo.
My experience as founder, director and sometimes actor with ESTA English Speaking Theatre Amsterdam (1977-1988) also stimulated me to continue looking at the artist’s creative process and the participation of the artist in the community.
I value Hugo’s collection and continue to exhibit it. I invite people with similar interests to join me for a cup of coffee, tea, a glass of wine - and some genial conversation.
